The independent laboratory AV-Comparatives regularly publishes the results of tests with security solutions. For nearly twenty products, it also establishes a ranking in relation to the impact on system performance.
With Lenovo E560 ThinPad computer with an Intel Core i5-6200 processor, 8GB of RAM and SSD, such security solutions with their default settings were tested in a Windows 10 environment (64-bit).
The evaluation took place with tasks such as copying files, archive files, installing and uninstalling applications, launching applications, and downloading files. Points are awarded as well: 5 poor, 10 and 15 points for fast execution of the fast task. A total score AV-C is obtained.
AV-Comparatives then use benchmark PC Mark 8 Home to evaluate performance. Without security solution installed, the base score is 100. It decreases the impact on antivirus performance.
The two scores are added. A maximum total of 175, the subtraction is done to obtain a score of impact of the virus. It will be even smaller if the performance impact is low. Table below summarizes the results obtained:
The antivirus podium with the least impact on system performance consists of Avira Antivirus Pro 15.0, ESET Smart Security 9.0 and McAfee Internet Security 2017. Tencent products, Avast, BitDefender , Kaspersky Lab, and Quick Heal Emisoft are also antirvirus part of the three-star.
At the bottom and with a single star: Sophos, Trend Micro and Microsoft Lavasoft. It is always surprising to see Windows Defender rank last, while one might think that on Windows, this Microsoft product with hand an advantage to avoid impacting system performance.
